"We recognize that many Indigenous nations have long standing relationships with the territories upon which York University campuses are located that precede the establishment of York University. Winters College Council, as a student run council that is situated on the York University campus, acknowledges its presence on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations. The area known as Tkaronto has been care taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Huron-Wendat, and the MĂ©tis. It is now home to many Indigenous Peoples. We acknowledge the current treaty holders, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory is subject of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes region. Often we hear a land acknowledgement and then move on with our lives without understanding the full weight of what that means, we'd like to acknowledge the oppression and genocide past and present of our Indigenous brothers, sisters, and siblings and continue to stand as artists and storytellers in solidarity and as allies.

We would like to credit the Indigenous Council, the Aboriginal Students Association at York, and Emma Ferreira for this Land Acknowledgment"
